History has shown that starting a business during a recession can be a great move. Business legends such as Microsoft, Intel and Southwest Airlines were all birthed in recessionary periods or down markets. The United States Business administration noted in its 2009 Small Business Economy report, that "18 of the 30 companies that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average were launched in recessions or in bear stock markets."
Investors understand that investing in a down market is the best time to buy. Likewise, now is the time for those with an entrepreneurial spirit to start their own business. Just about everyone is looking for additional streams of income or ways to completely replace their salaries. This desire to find new streams of income is one of the main reasons for the tremendous network marketing boom in recent years.
Direct selling, better known as network marketing, is a referral-based business model that utilizes the power of word-of-mouth and independent distributors to sell and market products or services directly to the consumer. Since companies do not use expensive advertising methods or fixed retail storefronts to sell their products, the money that would traditionally be used for those things is now passed on to the distributors. In network marketing, distributors are their own CEOs, they are their own bosses. They can work from home, have flexible schedules, eliminate long commutes and most of all do not have to worry about being handed a pink slip.
More people are tapping into their entrepreneurial spirit and exploring the industry of network marketing. According to the Direct Selling Association, there are nearly 15.2 million direct sellers in the United States and over 57 million worldwide doing an estimated 97 billion dollars in sales. 85.2% of all direct sellers are women. People are ditching the American standard of a work 40 plus hour work week for more financial freedom and what is called a residual income stream.
So the question remains, Is it time to start something new? Well we're still in a recession aren't we?
